Sapphire, Birthstone of September

Those born in September have the pleasure of calling Sapphire their Birthstone. When hearing the word Sapphire it’s unsurprising that people conjure up images of the intense royal blue stone. After all, apart from Topaz or Tanzanite no other blue gemstones quite come close to the iconic blue of a Sapphire.

Sapphires come in almost every colour, ranging from delicate lilac and colourless gemstones to hot pink and vibrant yellow gemstone varieties. However, when gemstone and jewellery professionals use the word ‘Sapphire’ alone they are usually referring to blue Sapphire.

Blue sapphires symbolise nobility truth and sincerity and have decorated the robes of royalty and clergy members for centuries. The classic blue colour evokes a calmness, and is beautiful paired with a wide variety of other colours and stones.

SapphireSapphire is found in many parts of the world, but the most prized Sapphires are from Myanmar (Burma), Kashmir and Sri Lanka. The purer the blue of the Sapphire, the greater its value. However as with all gemstones the appeal of a colour is very much down to personal preference.

If you're searching for the perfect sapphire we've got a lovely range of colours, cuts and sizes available in our online gemstone catalogue. If you're after something specific please contact a member of the G.F. Williams & Co. team on +44 (0)207 405 5477 or email
