MOONSTONE

Resembling the shimmer of moonlight, Moonstone exhibits true adularescence - the ability of light to enter into the crystalline structure and bounce back and forth, creating an aura or shimmering quality.

The milky, bluish/white sheen of Moonstone creates a floating effect along the transparent or translucent body of this gemstone. Moonstones that show an almost three-dimensional depth of colour, are particularly highly prized, as no other gemstone can replicate this feature.

Sources: Sri Lanka is where the rare and valued bluish, nearly transparent Moonstones are most often found, while Australia, Brazil, Germany, India, Madagascar, Mexico, Myanmar, Norway, Switzerland, Tanzania, and the USA are also known sources of Moonstone.

Similar gemstones: Moonstone’s unique properties and distinct appearance make it almost unmistakable for any other gemstones. Opal, Chalcedony and Ammolite are also similar gems, but are either significantly harder or softer than Moonstone.

Colour palette: Although Moonstone is usually colourless, it does come in many colours - yellow, brown, green, grey, white, pink and blue.

The most desired and valuable are Moonstones those that have a deep blue sheen, high clarity and a white to colourless body colour, and those with a blue shiller or aventurescence, usually found in a white or grey-bodied stone.

Rainbow Moonstone is a gemstone with a blue sheen, but is also a name for Labradorite.

More information about Moonstone: Moonstone is the alternative Birthstone of June (the other being Pearl), the 20th Wedding Anniversary gemstone and associated of goodness, fidelity and love.
