Why does October have two birthstones?

Among several months, October is one that has two birthstones — but why is this?
Traditionally, opal is October’s original birthstone. However, in 1912, the American National Retail Jewelers Association revised the birthstone list, adding tourmaline — particularly pink tourmaline — as an alternative.
This change was made because opal, while beautiful, is a softer and more delicate stone, making it less suitable for everyday wear. In contrast, tourmaline is more durable and abundant, offering a practical option for those who want a sturdier gemstone.
Having two birthstones gives people greater choice, allowing them to pick a stone that best suits their lifestyle, taste, or budget.
